Edgar Bones

Edgar was a member of the Order of the Phoenix in the 1970s; Moody said "he was a great wizard." Killed, with his wife and children, by a Death Eater before Voldemort fell (OP9). Brother of Amelia Susan Bones, uncle of Susan Bones.

Mr. and Mrs. Bones

Killed by Death Eaters in the 1970s (PS4, BN). Either Susan's grandparents or her aunt and uncle Edgar. When asked in a 2000 interview if the Boneses who were killed were related to Susan, JKR said "They were her grandparents." She may have later changed the relationship when she wrote book five.

Amelia Susan Bones

Sister of Edgar bones, and the aunt of Susan Bones. Before her murder by Death Eaters, Amelia was the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement (OP6) and presided over the Wizengamot (OP8), including Harry's disciplinary hearing on August 12, 1995. She later told her niece Susan some of the details. Described as having a broad, square-jawed witch with very short gray hair, thick eyebrows and a monocle. According to Tonks, Amelia was fair and honest. Murdered "nastily" by Death Eaters in the first weeks of the Second Wizarding War (late June or early July 1996 [Y16]) (HBP1). Muggle newspapers reported the crime and described her as a "middle-aged woman who lived alone." Fudge believes that the murder was carried out by Voldemort himself (HBP1).

Susan Bones
Student at Hogwarts, 1991-1998 (PS7); sorted into Hufflepuff; in October 1995 [Y15] became a member of Dumbledore's Army (OP16). Susan wears her hair in a long plait down her back. She acquired a gruesome notoriety when the Death Eater who killed her uncle Edgar and his family escaped Azkaban in January 1996 [Y16]. After the escape Susan told Harry that she now knew what he'd had to go through (OP25). Susan was one of the Dumbledore's Army members who helped Harry cope with Malfoy in the ambush on the Hogwarts Express (OP38).

In 2001 Rowling flashed a notebook during a BBC interview that showed her notes on the students in Harry Potter's year and Susan is noted as being a Half-blood in Hufflepuff House. This information cannot be considered canon, however, because the notes conflict in too many places with the stories as they were actually published.

Susan is most likely named after her Aunt Amelia, whose middle name is Susan (OP8).

Susan's Application:

Where do you visualize your character fitting in to the post-war wizarding world? What do they do?

Susan has always maintained a low profile. She has always popped up in little situations, but has maintained a secretive background. She has been the neice of a powerful Ministry official, so she has her own ideas of how the government should be run.

Does your character have any hopes, motivations, dreams or desires?

She hopes to live in a place that keeps the old ways/traditions. She wants to see a world in which everyone moves back to the more basic of times, back to the days in which the wizards and witches joined together and did as they wanted and weren't in hiding from the muggles.

What are some struggles your character might undergo?

She has to overcome dealing with the deaths of her family, which all tie into her way of thinking. She feels that although Voldemort killed her family off, she needs to be prepared in case another wizard should rise again. She has to find what she truly believes and accept the darkness that surrounds her.
What are any existing personal relationships that your character might have? Susan has always remained aloof from everyone. She may have had little relationships with people before now, but nothing serious. She has always focused more on doing her work and maintaining a low profile.
What's a secret that your character has that he or she has never told anyone? She is obsessed with succeeding. She will do whatever it takes to get what she wants. She is not afraid of doing anything to get it, including using her body (though it is still quite virginial - but her classmates didn't know that). She has just been saving herself for the most opportune time to use it.

Short third-person POV roleplaying sample:

Susan surveyed the bubbling cauldrons with distaste. She crinkled her nose and turned away from the simmering polyjuice potion. She knew that she had to complete the potions for her client, but polyjuice was never a favorite potion of hers. She looked up as she heard the ringing sound from the other room. Someone had just apparated to her house. She walked out of the room, sealing the door so that only she could open it. She put her ever friendly smile on her face as she prepared to meet the person who showed up unexpectedly.

First-person POV journal entry:

I trimmed the ends of the fresh cut flowers and put them into the vase sitting on the counter. I smelled the sweet scent of the roses as I arranged them. I walked to the cupboard where I kept my supplies and pulled out the simplest little potion for feeding of roses. I had prepared it myself. Just a touch of it and the person that received the flowers would become very ill. It didn't take much, and technically it didn't really hurt you unless you continuously smelled the flowers. I poured the small packet into the vase and smiled, "Make sure you deliver these within the hour. The potency is the strongest at that point and you don't want to be too close to them. I hope your mother enjoys the flowers."

Susan is only shown in passing. We know that she has red hair that she use to keep in a braid. Her aunt worked for MoM. Much of her family were killed by Voldemort. In OotP, she asked Harry about his Patronus. Other than slight mentions, she is pretty much a background character and can be molded into almost anything.
